Unable to automatically print two-sided pageswith HP LaserJet 2015D

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel

I recently purchased an HP LaserJet 2015P which automatically prints two-sided sheets. In the Mac system Print dialog (utilized by Preview and Firefox, for example), a "Two-sided" checkbox is to the right of the "Copies" input field and the "Collated" checkbox.

However, in the Office 2008's custom Print dialog, the checkbox is not present and there does not appear to be any way to utilize this feature of the printer. I'm assuming this is because Office 2008 does not properly leverage the system printing subsystem, but perhaps this bug can be fixed with a future Office update. Thank you.

Well, you know what they say about "Assume"? It makes an "ASS" out of U and
ME :)

Double-sided printing works just fine here from Word 2008 on an HP Printer.

You need to install the correct driver, then choose the correct printer.

Sadly, HP is not having a very good time with their latest drivers. Make
them fix yours... :)

Cheers

Hi John,

Thanks for the reply, but that doesn't seem to be the problem -- I still don't have the "Two-side" checkbox in Office apps, but it's there everywhere else.

If you read this, could you do me a favor and respond with your driver version number? I found this by Sys Prefs > Print and Fax > HP2015 > Options and Supplies > and under the General tab it shows my installed Driver Version as "4.0.0.080." Does this align with yours?

While I understand what they say about "assume" (except not understanding why you would be labeled due to my presumption), do you know of another explanation for why all the other applications on the system I've tried to print from show the two-sided option, but Office 2008 apps do not?

Thanks in advance,

Jim

Hi Jim -

Where are you looking? Different apps call different levels of print
services in OS X - Office apps use the top tier. What happens if you open
the Copies & Pages list then select Layout? My HP driver gives me a
drop-down with options for Long Edge or Short Edge Binding.

The driver I am using is variously listed as version "4.0" or "2.2.3"
depending where I look.

But that probably doesn't get us much further forward, since I am on OS
10.4, using a fairly elderly HP inkjet printer, whereas you have a more
modern and more advanced Laserjet.

When I do a File>Print... From Word 2008, I see a dialog with three
drop-downs at the top. The third one (that doesn't have a name) shows
"Copies and Pages" by default. If I drop that down, I have a "Two Sided
Printing" pane available, with a checkbox that says "Print Both Sides".

One of my least favourite aspects of the Mac is how I have to drill for
printer settings when I need them :)

Hi folks,

John, I see: since you have a different printer and different operating system, your two-sided is different than mine. (Do you need to flip and reinsert your paper?) The HP P2015d has an automatic two-sided printing feature, wherein after printing one side, before ejecting the paper, the printer pulls the page back into the printer and prints the other side.

CyberTaz, I'm looking in the primary dialog box that appears after you choose "Print" from the File menu.

Here's a link to the dialogue box with the difference circled in red. The first is Firefox, the second is MS Word 2008:

Thanks for your assistance.

Hi Jim -

Your screen shot illustrates my point - the 2 programs call different print
services. In the Word Print dialog open the list that says Copies & Pages,
choose Layout & you'll find the setting you're looking for.

Hi Jim:

No, I don't have to flip the paper, it does it for me... I have the
optional dangle-me that provides automatic duplexing (and really interesting
paper jams....)

As Bob says: you need to drop that drop-down and dig up the duplexing pane
(which is probably named "Two Sided Printing" and set the options there.

Once you set those options, they should persist.

If you are saying that you HAVE dropped down that drop-down and still do not
see the duplexing options, then Word is looking at the wrong driver for your
printer.

With some HP lasers, they provide a selection of drivers: one for HPCL with
RET or whatever they call it, one for PostScript 3, and one for Duplex
printing. One of the HP printers we have at work has four drivers available
on the network (one provides colour and requires a cost account number!!!)
we have to choose the one we need.

Cheers
