Unable to browse/open files on network drive word hangs

Please help if you can.

When we attempt to browse a directory on our server from the file->open
command in word 2K, word is hanging.

The hang takes place consistently in the same folder while the list of
files/folders is being enumerated.

We experiene this only in word, not in any other apps.

has anyone else seen this behaviour and how did you get around it?

This is usually because there's a dead or inaccessible link or path. Check
for dead drive mapping for starters.
