unable to check task complete outlook 2003

User is unable to use the checkbox to mark a task as complete. All other
methods of marking as complete are functional.

how is he trying to mark it complete? from the message list or from an open
task?

The user is attempting to use the checkbox to mark the task as completed. I
reset the view back to the default view then customized the view to include
the "complete" option that shows the checkbox. Now all is well! I guess I
wasn't holding my mouth correctly.

If resetting the view worked, then in-cell editing was disabled in the view
the user had configured. Resetting the view reset in-cell editing to the
default.
