Unable to check updates for Word

I have office XP professional.
After doing a system restore , I am unable to receive
updates to my Office via internet Microsoft site.

I am being told that the Windows Installer patch files
from previously updates are missing.

My templates have also quit working.
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. I am
taking classes online and need my WORD to work.
My restore option does not work now as well.
