Unable to create a TOC for multiple docs

I have been trying to create a TOC for several docs in 2007. When I insert RD
into the brackets created by control f9 both disappear.

Note that RD fields show no result in the document; they just allow you
to include other documents in the TOC. To show/hide the field codes,
press Alt+F9.

I create a new doc, do ctrl F9 which produces brackets. I type RD and when I
type the D (of RD) the brackets and the R disappears. Nothing remains. I have
obviously tried alt F9, F9, control F9 etc and searched the data bases, tried
ticking unticking various show fields boxes (and always reverted to default).
Why cannot I type RD etc in the brackets and what can I do about this?

RD fields are formatted as Hidden text. If you do not have Hidden text
displayed, the field will disappear. This really should not happen, but in
fact you would see the same behavior with XE and TC fields (also Hidden). I
hadn't realized this because I always have all nonprinting characters
displayed.

Thanks. That allowed me to type the text in. But I typed in {RD "test and
test.doc"} pressed update table and came up with message 'this file could not
be found' and it gave in brackets afterwards the correct filename (test and
test.doc) and location. The quotes are not smart but normal. I have tried
various files in various locations.
Any ideas?

I have finally worked out how to solve the problem. It appears that in 2007
you have to put .docx not .doc at the end of the file name

Same here.

To me, the nonprinting marks are indispensable. The downside,
apparently, is that I don't pay attention to which fields are formatted
as hidden. :-(
