Unable to double click open word files - error -10660

Sean O'Connor

I just purchased Office v.X today and installed it without any
problems on my G4 Mac. The problems started when I tried to double
click on a word document to open it up - I get an error message saying
"The Operation could not be completed. An unexpected error occurred
(error code -10660)."

The odd thing is that if I drag the file over the icon in the dock,
the file opens without a problem. I can also open the file by opening
up the Word application and opening it through the File - Open
command.

The only thing that does not work is the routine double clicking to
open the file.

I checked the process out with excel but that seems to be working fine
- I can double clikc to open an excel document in Office v.X, i just
cannot do it with a word document.

I downloaded the latest patch for the office application but that did
not solve the problem.

I have tried to do a search for this error message in the newsgroup
but have not come up with anything.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Sean

If you successfully updated Office with update 10.1.5, then it's
probable that OSX doesn't recognize Word as the application to open .doc
files.

CTRL-click a word document and choose Get Info. In the Open With
section, choose Word, and click the Change all button.

Thanks for the tip - I looked and found out that Word was selected as
the default application to open the .doc files, so this was probably
not the issue.

The curious thing is now I can open the files by double clicking on
them. Very odd. It definitely was not working this afternoon, and
now tonight it is working.

Oh well, thanks for the help. The problem appears to have sorted
itself out.

Hi Sean:

Having installed Word and all its updaters, it pays to run Disk Utility and
repair permissions. I assume you have done that?

I can tell you that it also doesn't hurt to restart the computer afterwards
:) I know it *shouldn't* make a difference, but it often does. The reason
is that Unix does a lot of its housekeeping at either shutdown or startup,
so a restart can still sometimes cure those "damned if I know" problems.

Hope this helps
