Unable to edit a pasted excel 2007 object in word 2007 directly

Sometimes when I paste an excel 2007 object in Word 2007, the object has a
semi-transparent border around it and when I click to edit it, the screen
changes to Excel 2007 and I edit it directly. But, sometimes the object has
a black border around it and I have to double click it and edit it from Word,
but without being able to make changes I need to.

How do I set it up so pasted objects edit directly in the office application
that created them?

Are you sure you are using Paste Special and pasting as an Excel Worksheet
Object? Embedded objects always need to be double-clicked to edit them. I
sounds like you might be pasting, instead of using Paste Special, which will
convert the Excel data to a Word table.

Thanks for the reply, but I am using the paste special option. If I single
click on the object that has been pasted into Word 2007 as an excel 2007
object, usually the object has a semi-transparent border around it, and the
screen changes to the same editing screen I would see in excel, the app that
created the object. However, sometimes it does not, and the object has a
single, dark frame around it, and when I double click on that, it takes me
into the same editing mode that always happened with previous versions. What
is happening and how do I change it so that the objects all pasted in edit in
the same fashion as the new 2007 mode? Thanks

I'm sorry but if you are able to edit an embedded Excel object by
single-clicking it I'm not sure how you are doing it. Now, the different
border you are seeing might be due to viewing the document in different
views. You see the solid black border in Draft view and the light blue
dashed line in Page Layout view.

BUT, I'm not sure what you mean by your description of the "editing modes".
What do you mean by "the same editing mode as previous versions"? Are you
saying you see a menu bar and toolbars?

Thanks for the reply and sorry that I am not able to describe the issue well
enough for you to understand it.

In Word 2007, when editing an excel object pasted into a document, when I
click on the object and select it, the user interface turns into the same as
the excel spreadsheet that created it - it has the ribbon options of excel,
etc. The excel object itself has a semi-transparent, light blue border frame
around it.

In Word 2003, when editing an excel object pasted into the document, that
object has thin solid black line as a frame instead of the semi-transparent
light blue one, and when double-clicked or right clicked, it opens to be
edited, but the interface for editing it is not excel which created it.

Sometimes when I paste an excel 2007 object into Word 2007 it behaves as in
the first case (semi-transparent frame, etc) and sometimes when I paste
another excel 2007 object into the same word 2007 document, it behaves like
in the second case, as though I am using word 2003.

Hope that description is clear enough to enable you to understand my
situation and help me. Thanks again, Mike

Sorry that my description is not good enough to allow you to understand what
I mean. let me try again:

Usually, when using Word 2007 and pasting an excel 2007 object into it, the
object has a semi-transparent light blue border around it, and when selected
to edit, the user interface changes to excel 2007 (the ribbon has the options
for excel, etc) and the excel object can be edited exactly like it was in
excel 2007.

In Word 2003, when an excel 2003 object is pasted into it, it has a single
black line surrounding it, and when the object is selected, either by double
clicking or right clicking on it, the interface remains Word 2003 but you can
edit the object while right clicking and selecting various options.

Usually, when I am in Word 2007 and paste an Excel 2007 object into it, and
then select the object (place the cursor on it and click) it has that
semi-transparent frame around it and the ribbon at the top in Word 2007 has
the excel 2007 editing options on it. I can edit it just like I am in excel
2007.

But, sometimes when in Word 2007 and pasting in an Excel 2003 object, it
behaves like in the second situation. It has a single black line around it
and when selected for editing, I have to right click and select editing
options as though I were in Word 2003.

I hope this is a clear description of the behavior I am asking for help with
- I want to make pasted objects always edit like the first scenario - with a
semi-transparent frame and the Excel 2007 ribbon.

Thanks for your help with this

Thanks for the additional information. :) I'm sorry but I've tried
everything I can think of, I've used Paste Special for an Excel 2003
worksheet object, an Excel worksheet object, I've tried various states and
combinations of Compatibility Mode, etc and I'm unable to paste an Excel
object that requires a single-click to edit it. The border style
(light-blue/black line) changes when I switch between Draft and Page Layout
view but I still need to double-click to edit the embedded object.

FWIW, I've never known this behavior to be different. What you see in the
document is actually an image of the last saved state of the embedded
object. So the first click selects the "container" for the object and the
next click opens if for editing.

Here's an Office Online article that indicates you need to double-click an
object to edit it as well:
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/word/HP051899771033.aspx

I suspect you're yelling at your computer right now telling me, "BUT I'm
DOING it!!", <GRIN> but I honestly do not know how you are doing it. The
only way I can think of to single-click an embedded object to edit it is if
you have your mouse set to a double-click instead of a single-click. Is that
a possibility?

Perhaps someone else has been able to edit an embedded Excel object by
single-clicking and can enlighten us. I'm sorry I couldn't be of more help.
:-(
