Unable to edit chart data in PPT 2007

I have several presentations that contain charts created in 2007. I need to
edit data, but when I click the Edit Data button, nothing happens. Excel does
not open. This seems to happen with files that were created on another
computer and then sent to me. If I create a chart on my own computer, I have
no problem. Why does this happen, and is there anyway to regenerate the Excel
worksheet without starting all over and creating a new slide and chart on my
computer?

Were the slides created on another computer also created in PPT 2007?

They may be MSGraph charts rather than the new Excel charts.
MSGraph is an optional install item. You may want to re-run setup and add
MSGraph.

The presentations were created in PowerPoint 2007, but it's possible they
were created in a beta version. I tried sending one to a friend and he had
the same problem--could not edit the charts at all, Excel wouldn't even open.
I think I will have to re-create these charts, but will this solve the
problem? Will a PowerPoint 2007 chart open Excel if the presentation is moved
from the computer on which it was created?

As far as I know, it will. If you'd like to test, send me a file with a
chart created in PPT / Excel 2007 and I'll see if it opens here.

I bet you're right that the problem is the charts were created in a beta
version.

Working with beta software or files created with betaware on a real job's kind of
like stealing a cop's gun, pointing it at your foot and pulling the trigger. If
you're lucky, the thing won't be loaded, but the smart money's betting on you
limping for a while. <g>

I'd re-create the graphs if there's any question of them having been touched by beta
versions.

You should be able to open the charts when you move the presentation to another
computer with PPT 2007 installed. (Assuming no as-yet unknown bugs, that is.
Always the optimist ... )

Wish I didn't have to work with beta versions, but the publisher I'm writing
for wants the books out as soon as the software is released, more or less.
These files with charts are for students to use, and it won't do them much
good if I tell them to edit data and they can't open Excel! I'm assuming this
must be a beta problem and will recreate and test. I can't believe this would
not work correctly with final release software--what would be the point of
using Excel at all, if you couldn't edit a chart after moving it to a new
location?

Do you know if there has been any resolution on not being able to edit data
on charts created in the B2TR version of PowerPoint? I assume what I am now
seeing displayed in the chart is just a graphic and not displaying the data.

I thought I was avoiding the problem by saving the file every time I made
changes in the 2003 version, but in opening that file, I now know it was just
saving graphic imagies of the data and not actually saving the chart data.

Back to square one...

I don't think charts created in B2TR are editable in the released version of
2007, but, well...have you tried it? I can't tell from your post whether
you've tried opening them in the released version of 2007 or not. You can
