Unable to edit data in PPT chart

I am having some unusual problems with charts in PPT 2007, occasionally I
will create a chart and some time after creating all the labels, data and
formattting I am suddenly no longer able to edit or access the data. The
entire Data Section of the design ribbon is grayed out. My only option is to
create a NEW chart and re-enter all the data. I can shange everything BUT the
data. PPT also crashes randomly when working in charts but I save eraly and
often so I can work around that. Office diagnostics run clean and I am
running a very clean, corporate Vista laptop (new)

ARe you using Insert | Chart to insert the charts, or are you making them in
Excel and pasting them into PPT?

If you're doing the latter, the default paste behavior in PPT 2007 works
differently. It actually links to the data. So if you haven't saved the
Excel file, it's got nothing to link to, and you're just left with a
picture.

So the Edit Data button is greyed out? Wow, in that case, I've no idea.
