Unable to edit pictures in Word XP

I am suddenly unable to edit pictures in Word XP after having been able to do
this easily. Has anyone else come across this and found a solution please?

Specifics: a picture is inserted using Insert>Picture>from file but the when
I go to the format menu, there is no "Edit picture" option available, and the
picture toolbar will only allow me to "insert" - all other options are
greyed-out.

Would appreciate any help, please.
