Unable to empty the Deleted Items Folder

Outlook 2007 on Vista

I am unble to empty the deleted items folder. Get the following error "The
Messaging Interface has returned an unknown error. If the problem persists,
restart Outlook."
I can delete one item at a time till I've done 5 or so and then hangs.
