Unable to format dates!

D

Douglas Sey

I am an Excel 2000 user.
When I attempt to display dates in a range in a similar way, some change
takes place but some are left unchanged, and the sample within the format
cells/number dialog box does not display the different types of date when
selected, is there a download to upgrade this error?

Thanks in advance

Hi Douglas,

Your "dates" are probably text, rather than real Excel dates. This often
happens when downloaded from websites.
Format an empty cell as number, Edit>Copy, select your "dates", Edit>Paste
Special, check "add"

I would guess that some of your dates are *not real* XL dates (numbers), but
perhaps text.

Try checking them using a formula such as:
=Isnumber(A1)
Where you replace the A1 with the cell containing the questionable date.
If the formula returns a FALSE, you know that your date is not a true date,
but a text value.

To correct these "bad" dates, you can format a new cell to the exact date
format that you wish, and then right click in this cell

and choose "Copy".
Then select the "bad" cells, and right click in the selection, and choose
"PasteSpecial", then "Add", then <OK>.
