unable to ftp in frontpage 2003

JCD

Hello-
I'm new to website building as I just volunteered to help my church maintain
theirs. I've been successfully able to connect to the website thru FTP using
Dreamweaver and even WinSCP, but using the exact same login I can't seem to
get to it in Frontpage (which I now need, since they decided to buy FP
instead of DW). FP just sits on the screen that says "opening website" and
never does anything until I hit stop, at which point it says it was unable to
connect for one of three reasons. I have little information on the service
provider, but isn't ftp just ftp? What's different in frontpage that's
preventing this?
The website is www.missionbaptist.com
Thanks,
JCD

ftp is just ftp, but FP gives you an http:// method IF you have FP extensions installed (your web does NOT). So you will not be able to open the web directly with FP. You'll have to ftp everything down into a folder then work on it with FP, then ftp your changes back up. There are some features of FP that will not work on a non-extended web, and other features that you will need to know which ancillary folders to upload back to the server manually.

(life is easier with FP extensions), working "live" on the server and being able to see what you're doing is one...there are others.

You might do better using a third-party FTP software like CuteFTP. You can
download it from the web. Just do a Google search for it. But it's not free.

I understand that I'll have to work on the page "offline" and then ftp it;
right now I have a third party ftp program that I'm using to upload since I
can't get FP03 to do it. Any ideas as to why I can get a third party program
and dreamweaver to connect to the site via ftp but not FP03? I'm using the
exact same directories/login.

Just like has already been stated. FrontPage uses the http protocol when
the FrontPage Server Extensions are installed. It was never really designed
nor intended to use FTP.
Frankly, I have never used FTP and can't understand the desire of others to
do so.

There are some FTP servers that FP just can not connect to, because of how the host has configured
their FTP server.

I am mystified . My server is a FTP server and I use FP to upload
regualrly - daily or more often.

There is an option somewhere which I set long ago to tell FP that you are
uploading to an FTP server

A non-proprietary method of tranfering files?
Flexibility?
The knowledge of what's really going on, so that if the user switches from
FP they have a clue?

I sometimes travel to areas where I canot get a good connection. FP's ftp
will stop if there is a line break, but Cute FTP will keep going.

It's convenient if you have frequent updates and you frequently just want to
upload a few pages.

You may have to switch FTP to Passive mode. In Remote Web Site
Properties select the Passive Mode checkbox..

FrontPage's FTP engine will not connect to every FTP server.

I use the ftp mode in Frontpage all the time - no problems - where I have a
site but no server extensions. Otherwise I use the http: mode as usual.

This is incorrect. Frontpage has supported both HTTP and FTP since the
first version, and the FTP facilities are very good - much better than
CuteFTP, and you can do it all in the one app. The "clever" part about
the built-in FTP in Frontpage, is that it checks date/time stamps on
each local and remote file and warns if you're about to overwrite with
an older version. CuteFTP can (kind of) do this using filters, but it's
a lot more work. Frontpage is a "one button" operation.

I have not actually tested Frontpage 2003 with FTP, but it certainly
works in all the older versions.

The problem I have had with FP ftp is that it stops dead if there is a line
break. CuteFTP will continue.

Hi Wally,

It's hard to guess why you would get this problem. I've been using
Frontpage for a long time with both non-extended and extended servers
and don't remember a problem with line breaks.

I did have a problem with WinInet at one stage, where it refused to
upload files greater than 1Mb - something to do with a bungled security
update I think.
