Unable to get "check for updates" to work properly

When trying to check for needed Windows Updates, in the midst of the process
my machine's disk drive starts to run for no apparent reason. There is no
disk in the drive, and once it stops trying to read it I get a message
stating "unable to complete update check". Any ideas?
