Unable to get past Microsoft AutoUpdate

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel

I recently received Mac Office 2008 from my University, and installed it. As I attempted to open Excel (Though it does this with every application I attempt to use) It prompts me with Microsoft AutoUpdate. It had an initial update, which I installed. I opened Excel again, and Update popped up again. I chose Manual, hit 'Check for Updates', and it said no updates are available. But it keeps going BACK to the update, and when I hit X, it closes everything and I start back at square one with it opening the AutoUpdate.

grrr. I can't get past it!! Theres nothing to update, but it still doesn't open!

See this page for help with this error:

If you are still having problems, tell me what version this file is:

Microsoft Component Plugin

/Applications/Microsoft Office
2008/Office/MicrosoftComponentPlugin.framework/Versions/12/MicrosoftComponen
Tplugin

If you are fully updated it should be 2.2.0.

Diane, I appreciate your assistance.

The link you provided says that microsoft "looks in the com.microsoft.autoupdate2.plist file to see what you have installed" but apon searching my computer, no file at all comes up with this name. Narrowing the search, any file with the word autoupdate cannot be found. The help page goes on to say that "you can open it up and see what you have listed installed" but cannot find said file.

In reply to your post, I am unsure as to the version because it shows up as a Unix Executable File. When I command+i to get more info, it does not have a version listed. I ran the executable, but that did nothing.

Still extremely confused....

Diane, I appreciate your assistance.

Spotlight excludes certain files. All .plist files are in a
Library/Preferences folder. You have two Library folders. One at the root
level and one in your User's folder denoted by ~.

"~/Library/Preferences/com.microsoft.autoupdate2.plist"

The Property List Editor opens this file, but it's not necessary to go
digging around in this file.
In reply to your post, I am unsure as to the version because it shows up as a
Unix Executable File. When I command+i to get more info, it does not have a
version listed. I ran the executable, but that did nothing.
If you open a Finder window in Column view, when you select the file, the
version info along with other info about the file will show in the next
column. A Get Info shows the info under the General Info section.

Another way: Download this script then copy the contents of the clipboard to
this message.

Note there are different scripts for Office X, 2004 and Office 2008. It
gives the version number for each Office application, the component plugin
and your OS version.

This is the link for Office 2008 as a script application. Place the script
anywhere and double click to run.

This is fully updated. If you are still getting the message to update, it's
because the MAU is finding another copy of Office on your network that needs
updating.

There have been issues where the Setup Assistant was looping, but we have
never had a report of the MAU looping. One last thing to check. In
Library/Receipts, check to see if you have receipts for Office2008_xxxxxx
for 12.1.7. If those are missing, the MAU would think you aren't updated.

You can simply replace the Office for Mac folder in Applications with the
folder that has been updated.
