Unable to get updates! This is a good one!

Ok, I have spent hours going through every aspect of fixing this problem, and
apparently Microsoft does not have an answer. Hopefully someone here does.
I just rebuilt this computer and installed the entire office 2003 suite,
including Visio, Project, Publisher...etc. When I go to the Office update
site it tells me that I need SP2, as usual. The files are downloaded and I
have plenty of hard drive space. When the download finishes and the installer
begins the install it only gets about 10% of the way through then crashes,
saying that the Update was unsuccessful. I tried the Full install and that
didn't work, ( with the same results ). I tried the actual .exe files from
the Microsoft download site, and it just says that is was Unable to Update.
I tried repair and detect from within Word and it tells me that it is Unable
to Complete the Installation. The Office applications work fine, but I would
like to get the updates if at all possible. The original installation is on
a network drive, and GOD only knows where the MSDN licensed Office 2003 Disks
are located. I shouldn't need them. None of the options that I selected ask
me for the Office CD. I have done this before, and have had it work fine in
the past. Since I have just rebuilt this computer, there is no Anti-Virus on
the system yet. The only thing that appears in the OHotfix Log is the
following line... but shows it multiple times for the various applications:
"Product {90440409-6000-11D3-8CFE-0150048383C9} Microsoft Office InfoPath
2003 Version 11.0.5614.0: Needs patch.

Product {91190409-6000-11D3-8CFE-0150048383C9}: Not installed. Cannot
patch."

Attempts at installing SP1 failed with the same results. Running the update
on a single application (ex. Frontpage) failed with the same results. All
other windows updates have been applied successfully. I would love if
Microsoft can look into this, because this is not the first time that I have
seen this happen, and it appears that I am not the only one who is having
this problem. Something is screwed up in the application. Something is
just wrong... hopefully someone has an answer.

Thank You

Hi Scott,

As you mentioned having just rebuilt the system I'm assuming that the CDs or the CD images you installed from aren't too far away.

When you have multiple Office 2003 products installed odd things can sometimes happen if, for example, one has been updated, then
another product installed and then you go for the updates, but one of the more common issues is either a missing or damaged MS
Office Cache (MSOCache folder) for the Local Installation Source. There was a bug in the original Office 2003 edition that could,
on updating, remove the LIS on an unsuccessful update.

For the fullfile (admin) update you are trying to apply, if the information in this article doesn't correct the problem,
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/884298/en-us?FR=1
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/895975/en-us?FR=1
see if using the MS Office LISTool (under Question Q8)
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/830168/en-us?FR=1
to first delete then to enable the Cache for a specific Office product (you'll need the CD/source to rebuild the MSOCache) works.

Bob,

Thanks for offering this as a solution:

"see if using the MS Office LISTool (under Question Q8)
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/830168/en-us?FR=1
to first delete then to enable the Cache for a specific Office product
(you'll need the CD/source to rebuild the MSOCache) works."

It took me quite some time to find that answer (see Re: MS Office Update -
SP2 serious flaw - potential solution... 12/22/2005), but it certainly does
the trick.

Now, how can this be promoted as "the answer" to the majority of SP2
problems?

Had the same problem and after about 1 week of trying to install I ran across
an article which did the trick though I thought it had no chance of working
at all.
But I have installed all my updates and life is great
The article # from the knowledge base is 884298
hope this helps
If you check into this we are not the only ones having this problem
