I am trying to export my address book from Outlook Express 6 to Outlook 2003
and I continue to get the message 'The windows address book is currently
unable to perform this export.....' no matter what I do.

I was following steps outlined in Outlook help... anyway, when I then
import in outlook, 0 files are copied.

List the precise steps you used and what happened.
Verify that you have Outlook Express and Outlook installed on the same
partition.

Not sure how to verify that OE and Outlook are installed on the same
partition... One note: I am using a trial version of Office 2003 downloaded
from the MSFT website. I have purchased the software but haven't received
the disc yet - could this be related?

Steps performed: opened Outlook and chose Import - Internet Mail and Address
- chose 'outlook express 4x5x6x' option and clicked only the box for 'import
address book', chose 'allow duplicates to be created'. It runs and in the
Import summary window it says '0 of 0 records imported', 0 of 0 folders
imported'.

I have OE 6 with SP1 and Outlook 2003 on XP Home add.n.

The trial version may not have this functionality.
I assume that you are trying to import Contacts that reside only in the root
folder of your Main Identity's Contacts in OE, right?

In OE I actually have 4 identities (the addresses I want to copy are in all
of them). HOWEVER, I am currently unable to get in the 'Main Identity'.
When I try to switch to it I get the message, "the current identity could not
be changed because one of the applications was unable to switch. close any
open dialog boxes in other applications before trying again.' I have not
been able to resolve this, but haven't really needed to use that identity.
Thanks for your continued help.

That is the problem then, and it is an OE problem, not an Outlook problem.
You will probably get a faster and more expert answer if you post this to an
outlook express news group.

Try posting in one of these newsgroups:
microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie5.outlookexpress for OE 5.x
microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie55.outlookexpress for OE 5.5x
microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie6_outlookexpress for OE 6.x

A good website for information on OE is:

I just want to verify - you think the problem is this error I'm getting when
I try to get to my main identity right? (not the fact that I have multiple
identities) Thank you for your help.

Correct. Outlook will only import the default Contacts Folder from the Main
Identity in OE. If you can't access it, neither can Outlook.
