Unable to import avi files into Powerpoint 2002

When going to Insert - Movies and Sounds - Movie from File - under the "Files
of Types" avi is not listed. However, you are able to select an avi.
But you get the error "Cannot display this type of sound or movie"

We can open the avi in Windows Media and have reinstalled Office.

Any ideas?

If you go to Start/Run and type mplay32.exe, does the AVI play in that
player?
