Unable to Import Excel data

When I attempt to import an Excel sheet into Access 2003 I get an error
message,

"ActiveX component unable to create object"

I can't find any information on this error.

How are you trying to do the import? What is the full path and file name of
the EXCEL file?

The Excel file is in the same sub-directory as the Access database, a
sub-directory under My Documents. When I select the file for import (any
Excel file in any directory actually), I immediately get the error message.
The import wizard does not appear, just the error message.

I have had to use a work-around by sending the file to a different machine
that has Access 2000 on it, importing the Excel file there, and finally
shipping the Access file back to the original machine and converting it to
Access 2003.

Try putting the file in a subfolder directly under C drive. If the My
Documents folder is mapped as being part of the Documents and Settings path
(instead of being directly under C drive), the path length may be too long -
I believe there is a limitation of 64 characters for the full path and file
name string when using File | Get External Data ... | Import method.

Moving both the database and the Excel file into C:\downloads did not have
any effect. The same error message appears before the import wizard would
appear on the screen.

I'm still looking for help. I thought maybe there was something messed up
in the XP permissions, but I am the only user of this laptop and am the
"Administrator".

May be a problem with the ACCESS wizard and/or ACCESS installation.

Try re-registering this file:
Accwiz.dll

To re-register a DLL file,

1) Locate it (usually all these are in the Windows\System32 or
WINNT\System32 folder.

2) Locate the file regsvr32.exe.

3) Drag the DLL file's icon onto the regsvr32.exe icon.

Or run from Start | Run window (example):
Regsvr32 "path\msexcl40.DLL"

etc.


If this doesn't fix the problem, you may need to run a repair on your Office
installation.
