unable to insert a picture in word document; document freezes

When I try to insert a picture from file, the word document freezes on me and
the only way out is CTRL ALT DELETE. When I try to save an e-mail word
attachment, the same thing happens. The same thing happens when I try to
insert a text file or picture in Publisher.
