Unable to insert page numbers

Hello,

I am using Word 2000 w/ Windows XP. For some reason, I am unable to insert
page numbers into one document that I am working on. When I click
Insert>Page #'s, I select the page options I want (no frills), then click
Ok. Then nothing happens. If I try viewing headers/footers, the document
flashes for a second, then refuses to show either.

This only happens on this one document. Every other document isn't a
problem.

What could be going on?
