unable to insert symbols in Word

When trying to insert a symbol I get the 'Microsoft Word
has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are
sorry for the inconvenience.

Send error report Don't Send

I have reinstalled Office, deleted from registry,
restarted and reinstalled Office XP. Still now working so
installed SP1 (still didn't work) so installed (SP2).
Still nothing....

Any ideas???????

Could be any one (or more) of the following:

An accumulation of abandoned temp files in your local temp folder.
A bad or out of date printer driver
A bad or out of date graphics driver
A corrupt symbol Font set
