Automatic Update was unable to install, so I tried it manually at both
Microsoft update and Office update unsuccessfully. Help.

I tried all those things.

Am I really left with reinstalling? No thanks.

KB916521 Junk Update Office 2003 -A SOLUTION

Problem is destructin of registry keys CAUSED BY running MICROSOFT LIVE
SAFETY CENTER REGISTRY CLEANER!!
Restore them with a double click on the .reg backup file in C:\Documents and
Settings\<user>\Applicaion Data\Windows Live Safety Center\Backup.
Nice one, Microsoft.

Thanks, but it turns out this wasn't my problem (I wasn't using Safety
Center).

I contacted MS Customer Support for Office Update & got the following
solution:

Download & run the "Local Installation Source Tool" from MS & disable
and delete all of the "local" installation source items. After doing
this, I was able to perform the online Office Updates again.

You can Google for the local installation source tool:
