Unable to install MS Office update

I have been updating MS Office since the beginning of IE 1.0. Now, I am not
able to update any Offices updates. Keep getting the following message:

Error: Unable to check for updates on this computer! I am the
administrator. Do not have problems wth the 56k modem. No problem getting
MS windows updates. I have not update Windows Installer 1.0 (can not
remember ever updating) or missing Windows Installer patch files (.MSP files)
from previously applied Office updates. This issue beganin 200.
