I installed Office standard edition 2003. then I ran activation then tried to
install the updates from office.microsoft.com. I successfully installed all
the updates EXCEPT 5 updates:
-Security Update for Word 2003 (KB934181)
-Security Update for Office 2003 (KB934180)
-Security Update for Excel 2003 (KB933666)
-Update for PowerPoint 2003 (KB933669)
-Update for Outlook 2003 Junk Email Filter (KB934708)

I tried to reboot maybe it just need to restart for some updates to take
effect before I can install these but it was still the same. No errors or
other comments just say "installation unsuccessful". I went to microsoft
update, no update available.
I tried to re-install it but still the same. I appreciate any help from you
guys. thanks in advance.

I have the exact same problem. Those same 5 updates will not apply. WAU
tries for a long time, then just says it is unable to install those, with no
reason given.

I downloaded them, to install separately, in hopes of getting an error
message.

Sure enough, after each one of these tries to install, a pop-up says
"Invalid drive M:", and then exits when I hit OK.

Until about a month ago, I had a drive M: partition, but I consolidated a
couple of partitions, and now I don't have an M: drive.

I tried doing a Subst M: to a folder, and now I get a different error
message, but it still won't install.

What the hell?

I am also having an issue with my bosses computer, but only with one of the
updates (Security Update for Office 2003 (KB934180)). No matter what, it
won't install (Tried auto and manual), and there is no error messageon why or
how to fix it. Clicking on the error in history gives no information.

Sure would be nice if there was some way to check this.

I still have no solution for this. The worst part is, the "Downloads are
available" pop-up keeps popping up, and I'm learning to ignore it. If I
don't get a fix soon, I will disable WAU, which I don't want to do...

I have had this problem for a while and just figured out how to fix it. You
need to make sure that the Office Source Engine service is running or set to
manual. This fixed the problem for me.

Tried Conner's fix it didn't change anything on our end. We did find that the
Office Installer engine was the wrong version, updated it, and looked like
things were working, but after a restart, everything is the same.
I finally unistalled Visio 2003 Project 2003, upgraded Office suite to
Office 2003, reinstalled Visio and Project 2003, patched the hell out of it
and no longer recieved that error message. I did notice now thougfh we get an
error message installing .Net 2.0 security patch, say it fails to install....
Grrrrrrr
