Unable to install SP2-SP3

I bought Office Pro 2003 about a month ago in September 05.
To my surprise I need to upgrade it with files dating from early 2004.
Figures.
I run on XP Professional SP2. 500MB, HP dx2000

I ordered the Service Pack 1 on CD, I installed it, SP1 shows on the about
program.
I ordered SP3 as the web page says that one can install Office XP SP3 to a
new Office XP installation or to Office with SP1 or SP2 already installed.
Msg box: The expected version of the product was not found on your system.

I downloaded SP2, same message.
But I found this:
10/24/2005 10:04 AM Application Error Faulting application instupdt.exe,
version 1.2.0.0, faulting module mfc42.dll, version 6.0.8665.0, fault address
0x00004bb2.

10/24/2005 10:06 AM Application Error Fault bucket 52539628.


That was in the system info, software environment, Windows error Reporting.

Try doing a repair install, then try the update again:

Method 1 – Open Word, go to Help – Select Detect and Repair

or use Method 2 -

1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
2. Click Add or Remove Programs.
3. Click the Office program that you want to repair, and then click Change.
4. In the Maintenance Mode Options dialog box, click Reinstall or Repair,
and then
click Next.
5. In the Reinstall or Repair Office dialog box, click Detect and Repair
errors in my
Office installation, and then click Install.
6. When the repair process is finished, run the update again.

Most likely you will need to have your Office 2003 cd running , will doing
the update

You have to download and install service packs for Office 2003 if
you have Office 2003. Service packs for Office XP will not work

Thanks Connie, I appreciate the help.
It did not work. I must add that previous to my first message I had upgraded
the Window Installer to 3.1 v2. Didn't work either.

You may have something there, the CD for SP3 is Office XP, unlike SP1 that
mentions Edition 2003..

I think there is not already un update or upgrade for both sp.
The updates coming up soon, but when i don't know.

Conny,
There is a SP2 update on the Microsoft site for Office 2003. Alas it is only
a download which my dialup connection can't handle. I'll have to wait for the
CD.
