Unable to make changes in Excel files withpassword protection created on a PC

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger)
Processor: Power PC

I received an excel file that was created on a PC via email. It has certain columns and cells that are password protected and cannot be changed. On the columns where I am allowed and suppose to make changes I get an error message that it has password protection and cannot make any changes to the file. This only happens to the Mac users in the office. When I take this file to the PC I can make the changes required.

We are using Microsoft Office 2008 for the Mac.

Is there a way around this or do I have to switch over to a PC, which I am not looking forward too.

Thanks!

MacXL's U/I does not support manipulation of the cell-level protection
that WinXL does - you'll have to either have your sender unprotect the
cells, or use a WinXL version.
