Unable to modify normal.dot

I can't figure out how to alter my normal.dot. If I try to save a file with
that name, Word 2002 (SP 2) tells me I can't save a file with the same name
as an open file. I tried trashing my normal.dot and then changing the name
of an appropriately modified .doc file to normal.dot, but Word told me there
was a problem with normal.dot when I opened Word again, and that I had to
create a new one. This should be easy! What am I doing wrong?

Open normal.dot - File > open and select normal.dot from the templates
folder. Make your changes and save it.
In Word 2002, Normal.dot is a hidden file, so you will need to tell Explorer
to display hidden files first!
