Unable to open a document

In trying to open a spreadsheet that was e-mailed to me, I get the
message "Name conflicts with existing module, project, or object
library". And I click OK and I'm back to square one. Any suggestions?
I have an old version of Excel -- Microsoft Excel X for Mac.

First download the file to your HDD, then try to open it (click on it) while
holding down the SHIFT key.

I think that this might be a VBA problem and holding shift should prevent
startup items to run.
