Unable to open a Word 2000 doc with Word 2003

I have a word doc that was created in Word 2000 that I can open and edit in 2000 with no problems but anyone who tries to open it with 2003 gets the following message:

Word experienced and error trying to open the file. Try these suggestions .....

I have tried using the recovery option, opening it as a copy, as read only and so on. All produce the same message unless I open it with Word 2000. This is an important 6 page file that we need to edit frequently. Does anyone know how to resolve this?

Is the doc on a network drive ?
May not be a Word 2000/2003 conflict problem.

There are KB articles on this sort of thing
look for "Slow to open" + Errors + Excel + Word

There is a downloadable fix available for that.

It was, but the file and folder permissions were ok on it. I copied it to the desktop and tried a few things but no change.

OK, I was able to convert the file by saving it as an RTF in Word 2000,
opening the RTF file with 2003 and then saving it again as a word doc.
Thanks for the input.
