Unable to open a Word file from friend

I have Microsoft Word 2000.

Recently I have received two files from a friend which I am unable to open
because the files are encrypted (the file name has a red circle with a
diagonal red line across it).

My friend does not know how she switched on the encryption and therefore
does not know how to switch it off. My version of Word does not appear to
have this encryption facility therefore I cannot advise her how to switch it
off.

Can any give me instructions to switch off the encryption?
