Unable to open Access 2002

The message I continually get is "Can't find the database
you specified or you didn't specify a database at all." I
wouldn't think you had to specify a database if you're
just openjing the application. I reas the solution on the
Microsoft web site but that appears to be for developers
and not average users. I've reinstalled the software
several times with no luck. Anybody see this problem and
have the good fortune to solve it?

That is the error you get if you attempt to open the Runtime version of Access
without specifying a file. The Runtime cannot be opened by itself. Did you recently
install a Runtime app (or any other software)?

What's a Runtime app? The only software I can recall
installing recently is McAfee Virus Scan.

I seem to recall another poster with the same problem a while back, but he had
installed some kind of CAD software.

A Runtime distribution is when a person uses the Developer's Version of Office to
create an Access program along with a stripped down version of Access that can be
installed on PCs so the application can be used by people who do not own Access
itself. This Runtime version can run existing Access apps, but cannot be run on its
own or be used to make design changes on existing files.

When a Runtime program is installed on a PC that already has Access and the setup
program is incorrectly configured, the computer can then be left in a state where the
Runtime version will try to open when you are actually attempting to use the retail
product.

I have no idea if Mcafee's install would have done this. You could contact them and
inquire about it. Perhaps they use an Access file to store the virus definitions.
If it _is_ from their software you might have to uninstall it to get your Access back
up again.
