Unable to open attachments in Outlook 2002

When I attempt to open attachments in Outlook 2002, Office
XP begins searching for the files necessary to launch the
file. When it can't find them, it asks me to install the
appropriate Office XP CD to attempt to locate the files.

Is there a way to fix this without having to uninstall and
reinstall Office XP?

is this only the case for a particular type of file, or is it all office
files? what about non-office files such as PDFs?
