unable to open database

One of users who maintains an access 97 database came
accross this problem. When he opens database, he is
prompted for a password, once he enters the password
screen remain blank, if he hits spell check icon, then his
database opens up, any ideas what is going on, also when
he tries to run a querry he get this error message,

"There is an invalild add in entry for(msodbc connect
strbuilder) There is an error in windows registry for this
add-in. Correct the setting and restart ms access. For
information of registry. Click help."

any help would be greatly appreciated
