Unable to open default email folders.

Each time I go to open my email account I receive the following message:
"Unable to open your default email folders. Outlook could not start because
a data file to send and receive mail could not be found. To add a data file
such as a personal folder file double click the mail icon in the windows
control panel" What can I do to get back into my email account

Does the files still exist at that location?
Use scanpst.exe to scan it for errors and see if it comes up with anything.
If all things fail; restore from backup.

I also get a similar message: "unable to open your default mail folders, the
file is in use and could not be accessed. close any applications running and
try again." BUT when i follow the path (C:\Doc and
Set\myname\LocalSettings\ApplicationData\Outlook\Outlook.pst) there is no
such document or folder...
Outlook was working just fine yesterday. i changed no settings, did not
update to Outlook 2007, did not delete anything, etc., etc.
where did it go and how can i restore it?
