Unable to open default email folders

I have just set up a new machine on our LAN (Exchange 2000) using XP
professional with office 2003. I have set up a profile for my mailbox but
get the error following error message when I try to open outlook:

'unable to open your default email folders. You must connect with your
microsoft exchange computer with the current profile before you can
synchronize your folders with your offline folder file.'

can anyone let me know what I need to do to access my mailbox? I can access
the server and internet via the LAN without any problems.
