Unable to open .doc files in Word 2002 SP3

M

Mikie1

I have MS Office XP Professional which includes Word 2002 SP3 running on a
Gateway Pentium 4, 2.2 gHz machine with 1 gig. of RAM. Until about a week ago
I was able to open Word by simply clicking on a document file. Now when I
click on a document file (and Word is not yet running) I get the message:
Windows cannot find 'C:\path of document file'. Make sure you typed the name
correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button,
and then click Search.
If Word 2002 is open first though, I can click any document file and it
will open without problem. I am unable to track down any specific help on
this particular error. I do not have any viruses or spyware detectable. I
have done a 'system restore to a point in time before this became a problem.
I have also uninstalled and then reinstalled MS Word. The problem persists.
Any help would be appreciated.

I have a follow-up to my request for help. I have attempted various fixes
mentioned in other messages in this group such as: winword /r and winword /a.
I deleted the following registry key:
\\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Word\Data. All of these
had no effect. More importantly, I just discovered that if Outlook 2002 SP3
is running, the problem is solved. I can open a word file by simply clicking
on the Document file (with MS Word not open). When I close Outlook, the
problem reappears. I've tried this 3 or 4 times with the same result. Thanks
in advance for any help.

Try reregistering Word. See

Thanks for the quick response, TF. Please note I have tried to re-register MS
Word, using the command Winword /r from the run command. Another interesting
point I just discovered: If Microsoft Outlook 2002 SP3 is running then I do
not have the problem. I can click on a '.doc' file and it will open both MS
Word and the document. When I close Outlook, the problem starts up again. I
appreciate your help.

Have you tried Detect and Repair (under the Help menu)?

Hi Terry: Yes, I have tried 'Detect and Repair' and that didn't work either.
I have also followed other suggestions made by you Susan Barnhill to others
on the board who have had a similar problem. An important clue to the problem
might be that when I load Outlook 2002 SP3 the problem resolves itself, but
when I close Outlook the problem is back. Would uninstalling the entire
'Office Suite' and then reinstalling be worth a try? Thank you for your help.
Regards, Mikie1

I'm always reluctant to advise this but in this instance I'm going to
suggest it. Use Add/Remove Programs and uninstall Office. Then download
eraser2002.exe (or is it eraser.exe) and use it to finish off uninstalling
all the vestiges of Office.

Then do a fresh install and test again.

Thanks again TF for the quick reply. I have searched for every variation of
EraserXP or Eraser, or 'Remove Microsoft Office XP, etc. and am unable to
locate the file you suggested either through Google or Microsoft's website. I
would appreciate the URL if you have it. Thanks - Mikie1

Hi TF: Thanks for the URL. I have downloaded it and after uninstalling
Office through 'Add and Remove Programs' in the Control Panel, I ran the
wizard and did a further complete uninstall. I chose the middle of 3 options
(the last being the most agressive) and ran it. After re-booting, I then
re-installed Office XP Pro. I still have the same problem. I will try it one
more time using the most aggressive un-install option the next time. If this
doesn't work, I'll just live with the problem and hope that it takes care of
itself when I decide to upgrade to Office 2003. Thanks for all your help. It
has been greatly appreciated. Regards - Mikie1
