Unable to open Documents in Office 2004

I am running Office 2004 for Mac on a G4. When I attempt to load
files developed with previous version Word 98 for Mac. I am unable to
open the file. Word 2004 does not appear to recognize the file as a
Word document. It offers a series of converters of which none work
(they give me gibberish).
