unable to open excel data source via dde

I'm an Xp user. I'm trying to do a mail merge with a named cell range from
excel. However, when try to open data source using DDE, none of my named
ranges show up. The source I need to use is already the first worksheet. It
opens if I don't use DDE bu of course with poor formatting.
