Unable to Open Files via Menu

Version: 2004
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel

I am no longer able to open files through the Open command in Word 2004. I get a dialog box that covers the screen but does not have any files listed and does not respond.

The problem seems to be the same as that raised earlier this year in: "Cannot open files via menu" As in that question, things work fine in Excel and PowerPoint.

As suggested there, I removed the .plist file. (User/Library/Preferences/com.Microsoft.Word.plist) It did not resolve the problem.

Any thoughts? Thanks.

Have you kept Office updated? 11.5.1 is the current level.

Also make sure you run Disk Utility - Repair Disk Permissions after any OS
X/Software/driver updates you apply.

I'm having the same problem. The dialog box runs across the screen and into infinity - I can't find either the left or right ends when I try to move the box one way or the other. It worked fine after I installed Office. The issue just started recently.

The OS is at 10.5.5, Office is at 11.5.1 and I repaired all differences in file permissions using the Disk Utility.

Hi Rick -

I haven't seen this occur & there weren't any reports of it prior to the
10.5.5 OS X update, so I'm wondering if the two may be connected. As the OP
in this thread hasn't replied back I don't even know if the issue has been
resolved or not.

All I can suggest is to see if Apple has a Combo version of the update -
often they are far more complete & fix things the Software Update version
might disrupt. Let us know how you make out.

I had the same problem. I had to download all the updates for office 2004
(11.5.0 and 11.5.1 and XML converter) and then delete a corrupted preference,
before Word worked again (make sure you quit Word before deleting the
preference). This file did the trick:

~Library/Preferences/com.microsoft.Word.plist
