unable to open individual contacts

Fred

Hi, I'm just recently unable to open individual contacts within Outlook 2003.
Recently installed latest batch of Office and Microsoft updates, and updated
Norton virsus/firewall. I've uninstalled the Google Desktop.

When either searching for a name or double clicking on one from the contacts
list - Outlook does an unexpected shut down and restart.

Any suggestions?

thanks,

Fred

First thing I would try is to clean up the forms cache.

To do so, follow these steps:
1. On the Tools menu, click Options.
2. Click the Other tab, and then click Advanced Options.
3. Click Custom Forms.
4. Click Manage Forms.
5. Click Clear Cache.
6. Close all open windows, and then restart Outlook 2003.

If the above does not work, try the following.

Deleting the Forms Cache File:
The Frmcache.dat file is the primary file to delete. The Frmcache.dat
file serves as an index of the individual forms that have been cached
on the computer. Use the following steps to manually delete the
Frmcache.dat file. In addition, these steps delete all of the cached
forms on your computer, which are stored in subfolders of the
Forms folder.

1.. Quit Outlook.
2.. Search the Hard drive (<F3>) to locate the Frmcache.dat file.
(Be sure to check in HIDDEN files on W2K or WXP.)
3.. Delete all that are found from the FIND window.
4.. Open Outlook.

When you restart Outlook, and use a form, the forms cache
is re-created.

I tried both solutions, and neither one worked. Any more ideas? It looks
like I'm not the only one with this problem. Perhaps it has to do with recent
updates, but I would need help diagnosing and fixing that problem as well.

I would try using the DETECT and REPAIR option. You will find this
on the HELP menu in Outlook.

I have exactly the same problem as described in this string. My failure mode
also started a few days ago, just after loading the following MS updates:

1. Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool (KB892130)
2. Security Update for Outlook 2003 (KB924085)
3. Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool (KB890830)
4. Update for Outlook 2003 Junk Email Filter (KB925534)

Do you think that removing any of these updates, if possible, will help?

How do we get Microsoft to help us with what would clearly appear to be a
Microsoft issue?

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Although my MS Update History indeed shows that I successfully

KB925534 in the Add and Remove Programs section of my Control Panel.
This is really confusing - any suggestions on how I can locate these
updates in order to remove them?

Did you check the "Show updates" checkbox at the top of Add/Remove Programs?

Brian:

I am running Windows XP Professional, and there are no boxes at all in the
Add and Remove Programs window. However, there are 50 or more Updates listed
in the window, none of them, unfortunately, the ones I am looking for.

In summary, although my MS Update History indeed shows that I successfully
installed
these 4 updates, I cannot find either # 2, KB924085 or #4, KB925534 in the
Add and Remove Programs section of my Control Panel. This is really
confusing - any suggestions on how I can locate these updates in order to
remove them?

Thanks!

Yes, I am using an Administrator Account. An associate of mine has
pointed out that my problem may be related to the fact that I have
not as yet installed SP2. What do you think?

Absolutely. I seem to recall that SP2 added that check box.

Brian:

Thanks for this input.

I have been reluctant to install SP2 up to now because a number of my
associates who have already done so indicated that SP2 caused certain
problems with other, non-MS programs, installed on their machines. Certain
of the programs were not compatible with SP2, and would no longer run.
Apparantly updated versions of these non-MS programs were required.

Have you had any personal experience, one way or another, with this
potential problem?

Thanks again for all your help.

I suppose it's possible, but I personally haven't encountered any program
that runs in pre-SP2 Windows XP that won't run in Windows XP with SP2
installed. Instead of relying on hearsay, it might be worth creating a test
PC where you can actually try the combinations in question. This article:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/895129/en-us provides a presentation and
describes tools on how you might accomplish that. There are other articles
discussing compatibility of SP2 in the MS Knowledgebase as well.

Thanks for your thoughtful inputs. I plan to follow-up with the SP2
installation.

I can affirm I experienced the same plugin.dll error(outlook crash). After
uninstalling just one update 2. Security Update for Outlook 2003 (KB924085)
my issues in opening new, editing existing, or creating new distribution
lists are resolved. KB924085 is the culprit.
