Unable to Open Microsoft Word

Every time I try to open Word the message "an illegal
operation has been performed, if this continues contact
vendor". I reinstalled Word 2000 but the message
persists. The program has worked OK since I got the
computer (with programs) in 1998. Any suggests on
correcting this problem?
