Office XP 2002
Windows XP Pro

I'm unable to open OFFICE programs with Service Pack-2
loaded.

I've reinstalled Office XP, version 2002 from the CD. No
good.
Repaired Office from CD. No good.
Uninstalled Office and reinstalled. Works fine.
Updated Service Pack 1. Works fine.
Updated Service Pack 2 and security updates. No good.

I'm concerned because of the security vulnerabilities
associated with SP-1. Here's what happens when I try
opening a Word or Excel file after loading SP-2.

Word Documents-the following message trail appears:
"Word cannot open this document template. (C:\Program
Files\...\PDFMaker.dot)"
Click OK
"The file Doc1.doc is not available"
Click OK
Click exit (X) for word
"The file Normal.dot already exists. Do you want to
replace the existing file?"
Click No
Save As window displays
Click exit (X)
Click exit (X) for word
"Changes have been made that affect the global template,
Normal.dot. Do you want to save those changes?"
Click No
Word closes down

I've also tried saving the Normal.dot template. Word
still does not work with any exisitng .doc files. I can
make a new word dcoument but then I can't open it again.

Excel files-The following message trail appears:
"Unable to read file"
Click OK
"Unable to read file"
Click OK
Click exit (X) for Excel

Any advise you can give would be appreciated.

Thanks Beth,
I use McAfee no Norton. I've looked for plug-ins but
don't find any for Office. The programs I have installed
are:
McAfee Virus Scan and Personal Firewall +
Earthlink Total Access 2004

Is it possible Norton was installed at one time? If it was then the
DLL for the add-in could still be functional.

Search for officeav.dll and if found go to Start/Run and run the
following command:

regsvr32 /u "c:\program files\norton antivirus\officeav.dll"

In the above example the path for "Officeav.dll" would depend on the
location of the DLL.

It's worth a look since it was after installing Office XP SP2 that the
inability to open Office documents due to the Office Plug-in came up.
The other messages you are encountering are symptoms of the problem in
the Office Plug-in as well.

I get the same problem with SP3 installed. I have Corporate Edition of Norton installed and I do not have an options for plug-ins. I ran regsvr32 /u "c:\program files\norton antivirus\officeav.dll" but still no difference
