Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) Processor: Intel haven't used excel for about a year but when I tried to open a file the other day all I get is 'file cannot be accessed - either file is read only or server document is stored on not responding'. I then attempted to save a file and got this message 'excel cannot access the file'. can't understand why word is working but excel and powerpoint aren't?

Check in your Excel Start-up folder: it may be there is an alias there
pointing to a file that no longer exists.

But when Excel is running, it opens a large number of files: without the
name of the file involved, it's difficult to know which one it could be.

Sorry: I need more detail.

Cheers

Is Office fully updated (12.2.4)?

How about OS X (10.4.11)?

Once you confirm or update as needed repair disk permissions & restart. See
if the problem continues.

Initially reinstalled Office but wanted to see how excel worked without the updates but have now updated Office to 12.2.4 and system is currently OS X 10.4.11.

Now when I open excel the following message appears 'Database utility log cannot be accessed'.

Have you run Disk Utility - Repair Disk Permissions?

Running the older version may have caused the problem. Hopefully repairing
permissions will restore it based on the updates having been applied.
