Unable to open Outlook Express .doc file attachment

I posted this message a week ago and had no responses. Does anyone else have a similar problem? Any ideas

I recently updated from Office 2000 to Office 2003. When I try to open an attachment Word document in Outlook Express 6.0, my Word program opens and gives a message "This file could not be found...". I am running Norton antivirus 2003, but defeating it has no effect. I can save the attachment to my hard disk and then open it with no problem. HELP

Hi Doug,

If you are using Norton AV then I'd say you are encountering an issue with the Office Plug-in found in Norton. Note this is not disabled when you disable Norton AV.

In Norton go to Options and in the Miscellaneous section turn off "Enable Office Plug-in".

As some additional advice, personally I would not open Word documents directly from email if you plan on editing them.

If you forget to use Save As and save the document to another location then your modified document is placed in the Temporary Internet files folders. Once the document is closed it is next to impossible to locate.

Beth, I have tried disabling Norton's Office Plug-in and it did not solve the problem. Do you have any other suggestions? Your caution regarding directly opening Word files as OE attachments is a good one, but I usually just want to read the file. It is awkward to save and then open when all you want to do is read.
