Unable to open person folders

I am trying to expand a set of personal folders in outlook and keep getting
the following error message:

"Unable to expand the folder. The set of folders could not be opened. Errors
have been detected in the file c:/Documents&settings\local
settings\application data\microsoft\outlook\outlook.pst"

What does this mean and how do I proceed?
