Let me start out by saying what we have installed. We are using Office XP on
Windows XP (small office/network setup) - we are also using Project Server
2003 (and WSS 2.0 by default) and IE 7. SOME people (managers only) have MS
Office Project 2003 installed on their machines, and this is where the
problem began.
I had the typical owssupp.dll issue (two versions of Office installed on one
machine) - Either IE would crash or get the error "Edit document requires
sharepoint compatible application...". Because most documentation available
describes the difference between Office 2003 and Office 2007, my situation is
unique. The developers here do not use Project or have it installed - so I
took the owssupp.dll from one of their machines and would use that whenever
someone had trouble opening a word document. Mostly we are using word
documents in Sharepoint. Until now.
Recently someone uploaded a Powerpoint document. If you click on it, it
will open in the browser as expected. If you click "Edit document in MS
Powerpoint", IE crashes. IE does NOT crash opening up Word or Excel
documents! This is happening on almost every machine that has Office XP and
Project Professional 2003 w/IE7.
I'm at my wit's end. I have uninstalled and re-installed Office xp. I have
tried every owssupp.dll I could find. I looked for add-ons for IE,
reinstalling Powerpoint, detect and repair, unregistering and registering
other DLL's... MSO.dll... Scoured the MS support website, knowledge base,
google, independent forums, etc.
The KICKER is that MOST developers (who have never installed MS Project
2003) can Edit a Powerpoint document with NO PROBLEM. DOUBLE kicker is there
is one person I know of who has both installed and can open a PPT to edit as
well - I have no idea, and am at a complete loss at this point.
I have been at this for over a week now. If anyone would like to work with
me to resolve this issue I would greatly appreciate it.
Here are some links I've already tried:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/833714
http://www.oirp.info/faq/Wiki Pages/Office 2003-2007 Incompatibility Fix.aspx
If you are also interested, I can post the error information from the IE
crash - it just says the mso.dll failed, but I don't know if the rest will be
helpful.
Again, at this point it is only crashing trying to open a Powerpoint
document from Sharepoint.
Thanks so much
