unable to open project via PWA or from Proj ro 2007 client

Greg

All,

A user ran into this issue today:

He tries to open a project file from Project Web Access (Project
Center) and the file will not open. There is not an error message.
Opening the file from PWA simply opens the program, microsoft project,
but does not open the specified project.

Despite the project NOT opening, it still appears as checked out.

After force checking in the project from server settings, he then
tried to open the project file again but then runs into the following
error:

An unexpected error occurred during command execution.

Try the following:

- Verify that all argument names and values are correct
and are of the correct type.

- You may have run out of memory. To free up available
memory, close programs, projects, or windows that you aren't using.

I have SP1/infrastructure update installed.

Any help is appreciated.

Thank you,

Greg

It has to do with invalid characters in the file name of the timeline. Could
be anything from an '&' to two concurrent spaces, mulitple '.' or even a dash
(-). Stick with single spaces, letter and number combinations and you should
be fine.

The file name does not have any of the invalid characters that you
mentioned. On that point, there are other projects that do not have
any trouble opening but do have one or more of the invalid characters.
I have not run into this problem before.

Attempting to open the file by opening Project Professional 2007 and
then selecting it from the list of all enterprise project produces the
error.

Opening the file from Project Web Access does not produce an error,
but when Project 2007 opens on my desktop the project file does not
open.

Attempting to open the project either way causes the project to be
checked out.

We have the exact same error. Just started last week. Any updates
would be appreciated.

Mark,

I have not found a solution. I rebuilt the project file using a
previous version and the error returned on the Proejct File....this
time the file was not even in the enterprise, it was a local copy!

I think that i might open a ticket with microsoft regarding this
issue. If this is the case I will let you know what I find out. In
the mean time, if anyone has ideas, I would sure appreciate you saving
me the trouble of opening a microsoft ticket.

Thanks,

Greg

I have run across a very similar issue, if not the same. I do not yet have a
solution, but possibly some more information. The problems arise based on how
the file has been opened.

We can open the file using Ctrl+O dialog and recieve this error. The only
option is to <OK>. (selecting OK does not open the file)

Yet, if we attempt to open the file from an explorer window, we have the
following options <Edit Macro> and <Cancel>. Canceling does not allow the
file to open. Edit Macro brings up the proper dialog.

We are baffled as well. Are these options available to you as well?

We are using Project 2003 to open a file (both on the network and local
copies)

Hi Greg,

Have you had a resolution on this yet as we are experiencing this issue on
one project and unable to open the project due to this which is of course
frustrating.

My only option currently is to do a restore of this project before the PM
received this error message, but interesting that you got the same issue when
you created the project from scratch.

Thanks,
Megan.
