Sounds a bit like a SharePoint problem to me.
The SharePoint support files are not available on the Mac. You need to
check the file out manually, then download it to your hard disk, work on it,
re-upload it, then re-check it in manually.
If you think this is the issue, ask your System Administrator for specific
detail.

Every time I attempt to open a word document created in windows, I receive an
error message that says the associated helper file does not exist. Is there
something that I need to change on the settings?
