Every time I attempt to open a word document created in windows, I receive an error message that says the associated helper file does not exist. Is there something that I need to change on the settings?

You can select the file in the Finder and press command-i.
In the information panel there you should be able to associate the file
to the Office application of your choice and click a button to apply the
same setting to all files with the same extension,

The problem occurs when I try to download a file online. I am able to open files already on my computer, but not ones that I need to download to view. Thanks for your help though

Did-you try my suggestion?? and it didn't work??
The fiels you download should also ahve an extension and if they are not
properly associated with the corresponding apps despite the steps I
mentioned, then there is something wrong with your System and it might
be time to use something like Onyx to reset the cache that stores these
associations for all applications.

*Where* are you trying to "download" them from? If the internet it could be
a browser settings/preferences issue or it could be a matter of needing to
repair disk permissions. But if you're being prompted about a "helper" file
it most likely isn't a problem with Word - the file isn't even being seen by
Word. IOW, Word is probably the "helper" your browser or the OS is looking
for.

Sounds a bit like a SharePoint problem to me.

The SharePoint support files are not available on the Mac. You need to
check the file out manually, then download it to your hard disk, work on it,
re-upload it, then re-check it in manually.

If you think this is the issue, ask your System Administrator for specific
detail.

Hope this helps
