Unable to open word attachment (from word 2003) from outlook 2003

Hi,
I sent an email with a word 2003 attachment. My wife tries to open it in
outlook 2003 and gets a message:
Word experienced an error trying to open the file. Try these suggestions:
Check the file permissions for the document or drive.
Make sure there is sufficient free memory & disk space.
Open the file with the Text Recovery converter.

She save the file to disk and then open it -- same error.

I sent this to her from gmail. I login to gmail, go to sent mail, open the
attachment just fine (and can save it to disk & open it just fine).

If she can save the attachment to disk and still get the same error, then it
appears that something is mangling the attachment as it arrives. The first
thing to do is to uninstall the antivirus program on her PC and reinstall it
without the mail scanning feature, to see if that's interfering. Disable
all other Outlook add-ins that may be active as well.
